In one of our motivational workshops, we explore a concept that often seems contradictory—life as a game of chance versus life as a series of choices. To illustrate this, we begin with a simple exercise: choosing a card. Whether it’s a spade, heart, diamond, or club, this choice represents the randomness we often associate with life’s outcomes. But is life truly a game of chance, or is it, in reality, a game of choice?
“Imagine this: in 20 years, we all gather back in this very room. Today, you might be 14, 15, or 16 years old. In 20 years, you’ll be in your mid-thirties. At that future meeting, we reflect on the lives we’ve led since today. What stories will you tell? What choices will have shaped your journey?”
This exercise is designed to help students understand that while cards are a game of chance, life is not. Life is a game of choice, and the decisions you make now will shape the stories you tell in 20 years. As teachers, you can use this activity to spark discussions on how daily decisions influence long-term outcomes. Encourage your students to think critically about the choices they make and the future they want to create.

After they have chosen their cards, guide them through a discussion:
- What does your card represent in the context of life choices?
- How do you think the choices you make now will affect your life in 20 years?
- What kind of future do you want to create for yourself?
- How can you take control of your life’s direction, rather than leaving it to chance?
This activity is a powerful way to demonstrate the importance of making conscious, intentional choices. By encouraging students to envision their future and reflect on the decisions they need to make to achieve their goals, you help them understand that they hold the cards in their own lives. Life isn’t about leaving things to chance; it’s about making choices that lead to the future they desire.
